Since its launch back in 2020, Magic Room has been hosting a number of successful events at diverse and iconic locations across the city of Hong Kong. Started by two French artists Mo-Shi and Leon, with the aim was to share their music and mindset to reignite a sense of happiness, challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We get to talk to Leo and Remy about events that are surrounded by electronic music and art.

HKclubbing: What brought you to Hong Kong and were you already here before 2020 and what were you doing before Magic Room?

Leo: Ten years ago, I embarked on my first venture with a business partner who was already established in the Hong Kong nightlife scene. As a DJ and consultant for international music trends between Europe and Asia, as well as an A&R for a European Records label, I spent two years traveling between the two continents. Eventually, I landed a job at Apple Music as a label Relations Manager, where I gained invaluable experience in navigating the complexities of a large corporation and adhering to its high standards.

After a five-year stint in Paris and London, I experienced burnout and took a year off to reflect on my future. Despite having lived in various cities, I felt a deep connection to Hong Kong and wanted to give back to the place that had given me so much. In 2019, I returned to Hong Kong to explore the possibilities, only to find myself stranded there due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

However, this unexpected turn of events proved to be a starting point for all of the projects that we are currently working on. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this vibrant city that has played such an important role in shaping our lives.

Remy: I was here before 2020, came for a tour in Asia in 2007 and had the opportunity to come once a month and date with the city till 2011. I discovered Hong Kong/Asia values, culture and really liked it to the point that I was feeling home. From the people education, friendliness and open mindset, the lifestyles convenience, the safety that has no comparison around the world and the efficiency on the business perspective, Hong Kong had something Magic that attracted me right away. I decided to move over here and have been proudly doing anything I could to introduce the city since then. Before Magic Room I was based between London, Zurich and South of France, traveling a lot to perform around the world.

HKclubbing: What have been some of your most memorable events over the last 3 years?

Leo: Undoubtedly, organizing an event at the Peak Tower in Hong Kong stands out as the most unforgettable experience of my career. Despite the numerous challenges inherent in such an undertaking, we persevered and delivered a successful event. From the exhaustive preparation stage to the live show and post-event analysis, it was gratifying to witness the seamless integration of various sectors, including sound, live-streaming, artists, and most importantly, our community. The event was a testament to the power of collective effort and the beauty of bringing people together. We are proud to have played a part in creating a memorable experience that left a lasting impact on everyone involved.

Remy: We had quite a few memorable events over the last few years but two of my favorites happened on some of the most iconic Asian’s observatory desk! Delivering to Hong Kong scene the Peak was something I always wanted to achieve. We were also very proud to be part of the takeover of Marina Bay Sands’s desk in Singapore which was also the first time an electronic music event happened on such a location.

HKclubbing: What challenges have you faced in Hong Kong in making your vision a reality?

Leo: The question of noise complaints is a perpetual issue in Hong Kong, given that we are the world's densest city. The prevalence of noise nuisances poses a significant challenge, particularly as we scout new venues for events. Nevertheless, our unwavering goal is to push boundaries and make our beloved city even more appealing to people from all over the world.

Remy: One of the biggest challenges that comes right away to my mind would be the proximity with the neighborhood and the loud music / noise involving any music events. Hong Kong has a lot of amazing location that we would like to introduce during our event but respecting the population living around remains one of our priorities. We often have to be creative in the way we set up our speakers and make our layout.

HKclubbing: How do you feel your events differ from what is in the current local market?

Leo: At Magic Room, we don't strive to be "different." Instead, we remain true to our values, which are, enjoying life by representing Asian music mindset with respect worldwide, and do what we do following it. We are passionate about what we do, and we stay committed to our principles throughout our work.

Our community comprises individuals who share these values and understand that by attending our events, they are immersing themselves in a space where they can connect with people who align with their beliefs. At Magic Room, we aim to create an environment where people can feel comfortable sharing their experiences and engaging with others who share their interests.

Remy: By growing up in Europe, we were born in the middle of one of the first scenes introducing electronic/house music. Leo and I have always been passionate about this scene and have been playing house and electronic music since our youngest age. Artists like Daft Punk were some of our favorite artists. I remember organizing some events for my friends at school and not charging them anything if they would let me play electronic music only. So, it was a normal continuation to keep introducing house music in Hong Kong when I moved here in 2011. We were the first ones to bring Solomun to Asia in 2013 for the opening of Cassio, followed by his first Asia tour in 2016, alongside with many other amazing artists to develop and propose something different to our scene. Hong Kong has a very eclectic market regarding the music and diversity is always great, we are just always very excited to do everything we can to support electronic music in Hong Kong and Asia.

HKclubbing: You have held your events at a number of different locations. Do you have any set location where they would take place more on a regular basis?

Leo & Remy: One of our primary objectives at Magic Room is to host events in a variety of locations, and we strive to achieve this goal as frequently as possible. In the upcoming season, we are particularly focused on shifting the location of our events. It's an integral part of our identity to explore and showcase different venues, both locally and internationally, to introduce our vibrant city to a wider audience.

We are committed to creating experiences that are unique and memorable for our guests. By hosting events at diverse locations, we can create a sense of adventure and curiosity, and foster a community that is passionate about discovering new places and experiences. We are excited about the upcoming season and look forward to sharing our vision with our community.

HKclubbing: Do you have a specific genre of electronic music at each event and what else can we expect?

Leo: Our music mindset revolves around electronic music and its various genres, including deep house, melodic house, melodic techno, romantic house, and romantic techno. However, our ultimate goal is to promote and introduce all forms of electronic music that align with our values.

As a team, we recognize the importance of music in bringing people together and creating a unique atmosphere. We are passionate about exploring new sounds and promoting emerging artists, while also paying homage to the classics that have paved the way for the electronic music scene. Our commitment.

Remy: I would add that we would usually choose our set depending on the location of the events, remaining of course around electronic music and its various genres. But I always find it quite exciting to create a journey that connects with the location’s diversity.

HKclubbing: Do you have any plans for taking Magic Room to other countries?

Leo & Remy: Magic Room was born from the desire to reintroduce Hong Kong through Art / electronic music locally but also internationally. We are always very excited to travel around the world and share Hong Kong’s values, lifestyle, and amazing cultural diversity. We have already done events since last summer in different countries and are planning to organize more this year from Asia to Europe and North/South America.

HKclubbing: When and where is your next event and any special guests planned to visit?

Leo & Remy: Our goal is always to provide more exciting Artists and events to our community. This new season starting in September will be again pushing the boundaries for the sake of our home, Hong Kong.
