Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?
ML: My boyfriend in college was an excellent house DJ and introduced me to that world. Before that I basically listened to classic rock and blues and was completely oblivious to the dance music world and quickly became obsessed with the culture surrounding it. When I moved to LA I apprenticed under the genius DJ and background music curator Michael Smith who now runs The Playlist Generation.
He intro-ed me to the latest equipment and music and I helped him build his background music business which was blossoming at the time. I basically only left my apartment to DJ and was completely obsessed with practicing. We had also started our accessories line, Posso The Spat at the time, and Vanessa just started DJing hanging out in the DJ booth at Hollywood clubs and getting equally obsessed with the culture and began playing. As cliche as it may be, I went to see Daft Punk at Vegoose in 2007 and had a massively positive life altering experience, came back and insisted Vanessa see them in Mexico the following week. Crazy times.
Will this be your first time in Hong Kong? Is there anything that you are looking forward to doing or seeing in particular?
It will be! We’re looking forward to a nice little adventure! Asia is such a club mecca right now we’re just quite curious to sense the energy of this incredible city. As far as shopping and eating, we’ll leave that in the trusted hands of the W creative director and DJ Angus Wong.
How do you feel that DJing and producing has changed over the last few years?
Well the obvious is that music technology is a force to be reckoned with. We both have classical training in art and music, but we both believe that these programs can most of the time assist your artistic expression while djing, especially for making live remixes on the fly during sets. As far as production goes, there are some incredible new plugins that help you get closer to what you hear in your imagination, which is fantastic. The only difference is that these programs make it easier for someone to experiment with no matter what their music background, which is a positive thing. As far as writing baselines and hooks for songs, talent and dedication to your craft are irreplaceable by technology.
What was your favourite memory of 2012 and what do you have planned for 2013?
Being in Bali this year for the W Hotel DJ Lab was the highlight by far. Not only is Bali one of the most magical and inspiring places in the world, but taking classes and becoming friends with mentors like Rob Garza from Theivery Corporation and Jason Bentley from KCRW in Los Angeles was literally life changing for us and how we saw our career in music.
What can we expect from your upcoming performance at WooBar?
Always the freshest new shit delivered and packaged in our Posso style...it’s gonna be crazy night.
Aside from your DJ equipment, name your top three touring essentials.
Lots of newly picked LA vintage to freshen up our look, cell phone charger, and lots of vitamin B.
What is the weirdest thing that you’ve seen from the DJ booth?
We DJed in Bali at Cocoon Beach Club last December 2011 for the launch party of our POSSO x Volcom capsule collection in Indonesia and while we played some people in the crowd made a human pyramid! It was a madness...it wasn't a small one either it was about five levels high!!! Later on in the night another group of people dropped to the ground and pretended to be rowing a boat! Definitely don't see either of these kinds of things on a dancefloor too often.
Do you have any pre gig rituals?
We clear our energy and visualize the night and the energy we want to project while playing--often times while relaxing over a cocktail.
Who in your opinion are the best up-and-coming producers at the moment?
We’re obsessed with Cold Blank, Denzal Park, Moon Boots, Round Table Knights, and Tommy Trash.
If you weren’t a DJ/Producer what would you be doing?
Designing clothes of course! In 2007, we launched Posso The Spat, a fashion forward leather spats and leather accessories line worn by celebrities and musicians like Rihanna, Victoria Beckham and Katy Perry. It was covered by style.com, LA times, and countless blogs. We designed a capsule clothing collection for Volcom for both Spring and Summer 2012 sold internationally and at retailers like Urban Outfitters and Bloomingdales.
POSSO will be at WOO Bar on the 12th October 2012. CLICK HERE for more information.
