The local indie music scene may have suffered in the past year with the closing of two iconic venues Backstage Live and Hidden Agenda, but who says Hong Kong’s music scene is dead? Freshly opened on Queen’s Road East is 1563 At The East, a restaurant, bar and lounge, and live music venue rolled into one, with the sole mission to champion Hong Kong’s burgeoning talents. They’ve got five themed music nights a week, offering a stage for local musicians to have a chance to shine.

The Hong Kong summer is in full swing, and nothing screams hot summer days quite like a junk boat party. But how the hell do you organise one? Lucky for you, our writer Sarah Richard is a self-proclaimed junk queen, and she has narrowed down the complicated process down to six easy steps, complete with plenty of recommendations. It's best to share this article for future reference!

After recently going through my remaining collection of house music vinyl I realised that there has been some what of a come back of people using vinyl in recent months. HMV in Central now has a whole section of vinyl, much more than when I actually used to order vinyl from the store over 10 years ago. Venues such as MyHouse and Oma still have turntables set up and have nights where local DJs play from their extensive collections.

I have asked other venues over the years why they do not have turntables and usually it comes down to a few reasons. First is the space in the DJ booth as often they only have room for CDJs or turntables, all of their residents use CDJs now with or without a laptop, or they just cannot get certain music that they want to play on vinyl. Another point is that for those DJs travelling to Hong Kong or even local DJs travelling to the different clubs each night, vinyl can get heavy and having USB sticks saves a lot of carrying that weight.

Playing and listening to vinyl is still very different to me and I can imagine more places dusting off their turntables. In the next few weeks I plan to donate all of my vinyl to some lucky Hong Kong DJ so these great gems can actually get played, which is what they were made for!

For this year’s World AIDS Day (1 Dec), AIDS Concern will run a “Be Care Full, Fight Stigma” Campaign, sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank. ‘People are aware that HIV will not be transmitted by daily contact, but they tend to keep a distance from people living with HIV. That is why AIDS Concern wants to run the “Be Care Full, Fight Stigma” Campaign to provide a platform for people to connect with people living with HIV by enjoying a cup of coffee brewed by them. We want to show people that all it takes is a small gesture to show concern and care to people affected by HIV and AIDS,’ says Andrew Chidgey, the Chief Executive of AIDS Concern.

AIDS Concern Coffee Truck (29 Nov – 1 Dec)
