Interviews

Read below about some of the biggest artists in the business before they come to perform in Hong Kong and Macau.

Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?

Paul Van Dyk was our inspiration to start DJing/producing. We used to collect mix tapes of his then decided it was something we wanted to do ourselves.

Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?

I originally started DJing just because I loved music and liked the idea of playing to people. I wanted to be the person to entertain them. I never wanted to be like another DJ. Production soon followed. It was a natural progression as I started making bootlegs and 'dub plates' to enhance my sets.

James…first, you've become friends with Simon Birch, which lead to this exhibition. What was the creative process like for you both?
I was invited to bring the show to Hong Kong after Simon contributed to the first show in London. I can only speak for myself, but the process was about putting the right artists together and creating an environment which would support their work in the appropriate way.

How do you feel that DJing and producing has changed over the last few years?

Technology has completely changed producing tracks and has made it much easier especially for collaborations. I can put together part of a track, send it over to someone to take a look at, they can add to it and send it back to me, and this can all be done almost instantly. I can also produce wherever I am in the world, which makes the balance of making music and touring a lot easier than ever. DJing has also changed a huge amount due to technology. You are no longer restricted by vinyl in the same way. It gives DJs more of an opportunity than ever to really create a sound that is distinctly theirs.

Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?
We have been djing since the mid eighties started off playing 80’s soul and early hip hop then gripped by house in around 88 – we started putting on raves in the very early 90’s and loved it ever since – in those days we looked up to house heroes such as Marshall Jefferson – Bam Bam - Frankie Knuckles – masters at work to name a few and any artists releasing on Trax records or other Chicago and Detroit labels.

Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?
As probably for many dj’s it all started as a hobby and thru the love for music. As a student I got a residency in a club in the small town I was studying in, this was 1996. There I learned all about dj’ing and working the crowd. My inspiration was Detroit techno and house, dj’s like Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson were my heroes back then.

Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest
inspiration?

I started a few years back, as a result of playing at private parties for friends who said “you should do this professional” Before I knew it I was opening a brand new venue in London and became their resident DJ. My inspiration is people like Swedish House Mafia as they make big room housemusic accessible for all!

Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?
We’ve always loved house music, and up until a few years ago, were merely the kids at the front of the crowd for every show. All those times watching your favorite DJs play to thousands of people is truly an unforgettable experience, one that resonated so deeply within us that we knew we had to become just like them. Mixing music was the next step.

Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?
I wanted to be a DJ ever since heard a DJ Hype mix CD for the first time and saw a picture of him standing behind some decks. I was only about 13 years old at the time and I could not believe that he had mixed all this cool music on these old record players I thought only parents used!

I was also making tunes in my bedroom back then but it took many years before they sounded any good!

Tell us a little bit about how you got started as a DJ / Producer? Who was your biggest inspiration?
Probably in 1992 hearing Fabio and Grooverider on a recorded onto tape set from an event called 'Fantazia' at Castle Donnington, I was aged just 13 and hearing this energetic music being mixed together really excited me a lot and it definitely ignoted a big passion for the music.

Will this be your first time in Hong Kong?
No, luckily its my 3rd time now :)
