At the risk of sounding a bit tecky this month I’ve just gotta shout about the new thing going on the world of Djing.   Its the introduction of software mixing.  If you’ve recently been to see Dj’s like Sasha, Gabriel & Dresden and Jon 00 Flemming you might have wandered where all the vinyl went and why there not even playing CD’s anymore.  The answer is mixing just went virtual and now it can all be done on your lap top.

Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (& Manumission)

“Manumission, the biggest, greatest, most debauched club in the world. You know, the one with the dance music. And the dwarves. And the people on stilts. And the fire-eaters. And the live sex show. And the KILLER RAVE DRUGS.” (NME)

Manumission; “a notorious Ibiza nightclub, once famous for live sex shows.” (News Of The World)

10 years after they started (and six since they packed in the sex shows) Manumission remains synonymous with sex, drugs and rock & roll as well as with Ibiza and the club culture that defines today’s island. Happening every Monday night throughout the summer at the 10,000 capacity Privilege, the club remains Ibiza’s biggest and most influential event, its performances and productions consistently outshining all other rivals as it backrooms serve the freaks, a combination that’s worked wonderfully throughout the last ten years.

“What makes Exit so important is the fact that there's nothing else substantial in Serbia that challenges the past or offers local people a viable reason to think things could be better. When the artists visit they love it because it’s a great gig though most don't even realise that they're helping to make history.

With Serbia’s recent history including ethnic cleansing, genocide and war, British promoter Paxton Talbot’s claims are neither overblown nor exaggerated, though he’s wrong about at least one of the artists on this year’s bill.

“What makes this gig particularly interesting is the fact that we were bombing Belgrade and Novi Sad just three or four years ago, says breakbeat pioneer Howie B.

“It’s mad when you find out what the fuck we’ve done to these places; or rather, what others have done to them.

The ‘we’ or ‘others’ Howie’s referring to are NATO and the most visible sign of their handiwork in Novi Sad today is the still severed Sloboda (‘Freedom’) Bridge, whose disconnected ends slope at 45º angles into the murky Danube river. Blown up by three cruise missiles at 8pm on the night of 3 April 1999, the clinically cut former 6 lane highway remains a powerful reminder of just how recently ‘the West’ was at war with the citizens of Novi Sad; the same people now flocking to an event headlined by a Western bunch of performers. As German philosopher Martin Luther presciently put it, in the Middle Ages; ‘music is a gift of God. Satan hates music: he knows how it drives the evil spirit out of us.’

Seb Fontaine: Leaving Radio 1 Is Like Leaving A Girlfriend

Seb Fontaine chatted to Skrufff this week about his impending departure from Radio 1 and compared the experience to a mutual break up of a long-term romance.

“I must admit I am a little bit sad about it and there’s certainly a lump in my throat, but we’ve also parted on really good terms, there’s no animosity or bitterness,” said Seb.

“It isn’t a case of ‘you’ve been sacked, fuck off’, in fact, I’m still going to be doing Ibiza for them as well as various other projects later on. It’s sad but sad in a good way.”
