Welcome pop pickers to the crazy, wacky world of the Underground! U31 raises it’s gruesome and wonderful head this Friday 11th August at THE EDGE. And what a lineup we have for you! OK, I say that every time, but this time it’s the truth, honest! I’m so excited that I need to go to the toilet very urgently indeed!

SLASH! SAKURA! SLASH! I would go and see this band just because of their name, but that’s the sort of sad, shallow person I am. Just as I will buy a book which is has a white cover and looks trendy. I know young Benson is good though, I’ve seen him before. Voice like a rocky angel, and as sexy as a very sexy man indeed. And...it’s his birthday!! Hurrah!! Give him a birthday kiss! All his mates are going to be there! There may be a cake! Australian acoustic pop/rock at it’s seditious best.

SHEPHERDS THE WEAK! Bloody good they are! Got an EP out called “Strength in Numbers”, buy it and singalong at the U and be ultra-trendy! Melodic hardcore rock...mmm. Wouldn’t win many Mr Universe contests as some of them clearly eat too many pies, but the guys rock better than those skinny bands!

INNISFALLEN! Saw their first gig at the U last year and was blown away. Their melodic guitar fuzzy chords really do it for me, and, they do, according to my new bird Lollipop, exude a childish sexuality that makes you want to mother them. Frankly, however, I just want to applaud one of the best bands in Hong Kong, not do anything remotely sexual to/with them.

SPERMATIC CHORD...some consider them loonies, others the future of music. Hear what Spermy (don’t you call them Spermy?) think of themselves..."Spermatic Chord has been inciting sadness, jealousy and awe amongst peers and audiences since 2002. Eschewing aspects of a variety of music and turning them into something profoundly unique, their art is seamless while intricate and sometimes just absurd. The band has developed a rabid following through their unpredictable live shows and ability to consistently write brilliant tunes... often on the spot! Their music is complex yet inviting, seducing the listener across time, space, and genre. As musicians, they excel... as a band, they transcend" So, loonies then.

And finally, and amazingly, the U proudly present , all the way from the UK, the SUSAN CONVENTION. Great name! Hong Kongers in the UK return home for gig shock! They are dead famous in indy rock circles! They could be the next Take That! (sorry, still sad at their documentary on TV last night, wasn’t Robbie a dick?). Founded as a cover band in London, now they do all sorts of rocky stuff guaranteed to have your pants wet in seconds! All of their mates will be there! They are young, so bound to be plenty of good looking chicks! Hoorah!!

And there you have it. U31, more reliable than the contraceptive pill, and infinitely more sexy.

Toodle-pip!!!

HK Live! returns with a bang in September when an exceptional show of live music from Hong Kong and faraway lands will be unveiled. After taking a hiatus in August, the event returns to full strength in September with an astoundingly varied and rich line-up.

Headlining the night are the New York based indie band Johnny Hi Fi - featuring a multi-ethnic cast of Taiwanese singer Eric Hsu, Japanese bassist Justin Matsubara, Pakistani drummer Asif Khan and female member Kim Henry from the Bronx. Dubbed as the "American Coldplay", this is their Hong Kong slot on an Asian Tour that takes them to play the main stage of the Beijing Pop Festival.

Supporting Johnny Hi Fi are The Love Song, one of Hong Kong's most talked about new bands. Led by brothers Ben and Nic Tse, this is a cutting-edge act with members from acclaimed former HK bands, Whence He Came and Uncle Joe.

Opening the night are the all-girl country act The Shotgun She-ras from Hong Kong, who play good old fashioned country music in an entertaining stage show. Check out the website for up-to-date info: www.hk-live.com.

We are proud to announce that Channel [V] is the Official Music Channel for HK Live! They will be filming the shows, interviewing the bands and screening footage of the event across Asia on their International Channel.
