In his 20th year as one of China's pre-eminent Rock and Roll musicians, Cui Jian 崔健 will come to Hard Rock Hong Kong to celebrate with some of his finest musical performances.
The red-star-hatted Cui Jian (also known as Lao Cui) is regarded by many as China’s Godfather of rock and roll, as he was the first person to introduce people in mainland what rock and roll music is all about. Back in 1984 while he was as a professional trumpet player in prestigious Beijing Philharmonic Orchestra, Lao Cui formed the band "Seven Ply Board" with six other classical musicians. One of the first bands of its kind in China to play western pop songs in Beijing they cited as influences such bands as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Talking Heads. In this same year he released his first self-composed song “It Is Not That I Do Not Understand 不是我不明白”. This hit surprised China with a style of music that they had not heard before.
Cui Jian becomes China’s first ever rock and roll star!
Probably to the people of Hong Kong and for the rest of the world, his name became famous because of the song he sang for student protesters during Tiananmen Square protest in 1989 - "Nothing to My Name 一無所有". Since that historic time, it was not until 2003 that he came to play in large venues. In that year he was set to open for The Rolling Stones Tour of China, but due to SARS the tour was cancelled.
It took until just a month ago in April, that this promised meeting occurred and he finally opened for The Rolling Stones. “To perform in (my) home city of Beijing again, to see the Rolling Stones perform live, and to perform together with the Rolling Stones are my dreams”, Lao Cui said after show. So far he released 5 albums in total and opened several other international acts such as the Deep Purple Tour of China.
If you missed any of his albums and would like to listen more of his songs before his debut at Hard Rock Café, you can buy them at a special price of HK$70 each with the purchase of concert tickets. Only at Hard Rock Café.
