The Aubrey After Dark welcomes a rare international guest whose career traces the evolution of modern electronic music. A Guy Called Gerald is a name woven into the fabric of club culture. His influence can be felt across four decades of innovation, from the earliest days of UK acid house through the birth of jungle and the rise of global electronic dance music.
Gerald first shifted the landscape in 1988 with Voodoo Ray, the track widely credited as the first true UK acid house anthem. By 1989, as a founding member of 808 State, he helped introduce British electronic music to a global audience. In 1992, he released 28 Gun Bad Boy, considered the first full jungle album in history, setting the blueprint for a genre that would go on to define an entire era.
His work continued to evolve through the nineties and beyond, with groundbreaking live performances at venues and festivals including Glastonbury’s Experimental Soundfield, The Sonar Festival, Tokyo’s Liquid Room, and even the Sydney Opera House, reinforcing his reputation as an artist who consistently pushes the boundaries of electronic sound.
Central to Gerald’s ongoing influence is his philosophy of True School. It is a stripped back, disciplined approach to music making, rooted in honesty, originality and forward momentum. True School rejects imitation. It values deep craft, evolving ideas and the belief that a dancefloor should be a place of connection rather than formula. It is this ethos that has kept his sound fresh across decades of shifting trends.
For this edition of Aubrey After Dark, Gerald’s set becomes part of the signature interplay between Cosmo Webber, the series’ curator in residence, and DJ El Toro, one of Hong Kong’s foundational figures in nightlife. Together, the three artists bring a multi-generational perspective to the night, linking the roots of UK innovation with Hong Kong’s own club history and the new wave energy shaping the series.
Expect a journey through acid, early breakbeats, house and the futurist rhythms that carry Gerald’s unmistakable imprint, all woven into the evolving soundscape that defines Aubrey After Dark.
